When creating my promotional package for the song ‘Just my
luck’ by the Artist, The Tennents they’re where many things that I had to think
about before I could start to create the package. One of the main things that I
had to research into the norms and conventions of music videos and the whole
promotional package I had to create. The conventions I was looking at where
things in music videos that show up a lot in the same genre of videos, for
example in indie music videos that is the same genre that my chosen song fits
into, things like Black and white and live performance.
These to videos are where I got the first idea of how my
video was going to look, from the conventions that I saw in these 2 videos.
Using the black and white in my video felt like it had to be a must because it
is how most of the videos in this genre look, but because I didn’t want my
video to look like all over videos I wanted to be a bit different, so what I
did was I used both black and white and colour in my video. I did this because
I want to both go with and go against this convention of the normal music
videos, so what I did was in the verses and bridge of the song, the video is in
black and white but in the chorus the video picks up in tempo and there is more
edits so the audience can visually see the speed change. While I was
researching videos I also saw in the video to the arctic monkeys song Arabella
which I have put above, I saw a very creative use of the video being in reverse
which I have also used in my video, I did this because there are not a lot of
videos in this genre that have reverse shot so I felt that is would break the
conventions of a normal indie music video but not too much that it would look
bad, I feel that it was used very effectively in my video and create a great
effect. Another convention that I thought was very relate able to not only the
genre of music but the people that listen and create this type of music, which
is drugs, they are many mainstream icons that we know of that are very open
about their drug use for example Pete Doherty, lead singer of the libertines
and the Beatles which are massively known as the band that started the whole
rock genre and it is commonly know that they would take drugs to write new
music. So I decided that I was going to recreate in my video a scene where two
of the band members are smoking drugs, the reason I did this is because it is
seen as a symbol in this type of music and is instantly recognisable when
people will watch this video, so I believe using this very strong convention
that will relate to the genre. A very influential music video I saw that was
about the use of drugs in the genre was Arctic monkeys – Why’d you only call me
when you’re high. Just from the title we can see intertextuality reference to
these things.
In many different indie music videos it is very normal to
see performance based music videos, so I decided to do this as well because it
is a very strong convention of this genre and I had easy aces to the band and
all there equipment where we could record it. The video that I placed at the
top by the arctic monkeys I bet you look good at the dance floor is fully
performance based. Which I think looks very good. When I did a poll on my blog
I found that more people like performance based music videos, so from my
research I found out this so I decided to go with this as a firm choice. When I
was thinking about the costumes that my actors where going to have to wear I
had a look on the internet at pictures of the bands
Here is a picture of the band Peace, they are a very
influential to this band and all of the members very much like this band. When
I was thinking about that they needed to wear I realised that for this genre I
didn’t really have to think about it to much, because the band already dress
like this all of the time, so all I did was gave them a few idea of some of the
clothes they own for example leather jackets and skinny jeans which are all
very conventional to this genre and when people see people dressed like this
you can tell what kind of music they are going to enjoy.
When I was researching the videos I watched a video by the
band, peace and the song was called bloodshake, in this video we see a scene
where the singer of the band is recreating a scene from a Spector video.
When I saw this in the video I had a very good idea of how I
could add this into my video, because in the rehearsal room they are many
poster on the wall of the room of other bands and artists such as joy division
and Elvis Presley, using these intertextuality references in the video makes an
Icon from people to be able to recognise when they watch the video.
One of the conventions that I have used in my video that
doesn’t really relate to music it just relates to the boys in the video, in the
and in the inside of the digipak I have done this. I have used the bands band rehearsal
room to record the video as it is a very boyish room, it iOS very messy and
they are beer cans everywhere which is what we would think boys of this age and
to the genre of the music as it is type of music that is very accessible to
people to see live so they will go to very niche venues to see bands and drink
cans of beer, which stereotypically we see as a male activity
Looking at these albums made it very easy to get a good feel for how I wanted to structure my digipak, I made it much easier that I have the physical copies of these albums because it means I can take the dimensions of the whole thing very easy and look at how everything is set out so I can create mine so it looks like a real piece of text.
‘Here are my results for my poll that I put on my blog, I sent this round in an email asking people to do the poll for me so I could gain a vast audience and range of different people, what I found from this is that my music video is in the most popular genre that people said that they favoured, my age range is 16-19 which is what I said my target audience would be, this is good because I will be able to use some of the conventions in music videos of bands that I like as I am in this age range, this will help me have a better understanding of what it should be like. I found that there was a mix of what type of music video people like which shows that all types are popular, my video will be performance based with some narrative in it. I also found that more males did my blog than females.’
From this I was able to add things to my video to make it appeal to a larger audience and to the correct democratic that will be most likely to view my video
Ta gain some more in depth feedback I have recorded people giving me feedback on my music video, the reason I have done this is because they can go more in-depth that they would be able to if they were just to fill out a piece of paper.
What I found from the feedback that I got from people on my video was they overall liked the video; I shared the video to some of my friends and asked them to comment and give me feedback on it.
They all said they liked the effect of the video and how it progresses, the main thing that they said they liked was the ending of the video where it come into real life, they said that this works very well in the video and shows them how much fun they have doing this, they also said it really shows that it is just a piece of text not something that would really happen, this reinforces the idea I had at the beginning using the ‘this is not a pipe’ Picture. All of the comments I received where good apart from one that a few people said that the ghosting effect is on a bit to much during the video
I also showed people the combination off all of my media texts together, they all said that they would be able to tell they were from the same artist if it didn’t say, they said that they all the same king of ‘feel’ to each text which means that what I have attempted to do when creating my texts has worked.
When I showed them the QR code on their phones which took them to the mobile version of the website, they were all very impressed with how it worked and how easy it was to use, they also said that it looked very conventional to a mobile version of a website but much smoother and much easier to use.
A convention of indie music videos that I have broken in y
video is at the end of the video where in a normal video it would fade out of
the song and the video, but in my video I have taken the audio footage of the
video from when I recoded it and I have had the music fade out and the live
audio to come in and almost give a sense to the audience that is really is just
a music video, by using this self reflexive style in my video I feel it gives a
sense to the audience that it is just a music video, I got this from the image
we where shown in one of our lessons which was called this is not a pipe.
The meaning behind this image that now media is so influence
it is becoming real, so this means that this isn’t a pipe, it is a picture of a
pipe, which I have tried to add to my video by trying to give the sense that
the video is almost self-aware.
During the planning and research into different media texts
I had the chance to view and listen to many different types of media texts, in
the for the ancillary texts I looked at many different bands album covers and
digipaks to see what the main conventions and to see the over all structure of
these types and genres album covers.
Looking at these albums made it very easy to get a good feel for how I wanted to structure my digipak, I made it much easier that I have the physical copies of these albums because it means I can take the dimensions of the whole thing very easy and look at how everything is set out so I can create mine so it looks like a real piece of text.
For the inside of my digipak I wanted to do
something different to normal, I had the idea when I was to the rooms rehearsal
room doing the first lot of filming for the video, and I was taking still
images to put on my blog or to use on the digipak. While I was doing this I had
the idea to take a panoramic picture, once I had taken the picture I had
another idea to use this image as the inside of the digipak so it gives it the
effect that when they are looking at the picture they have the feeling that
they are looking into a still imagine taken so it makes them feel that it is
real.
Form the research I did into a number of different digipaks
and albums, I haven’t seen anything very similar to what I have done, so it
doesn’t really fit with the conventions but I have used it to try and go
against these conventions and I think it gives it a great effect. For the
outside of my digpak I tried to give it the same effect that I did in my video,
I made it so it was very mysterious and you could just see the silhouettes of the singer Mathew, this gives a very
mysterious looking take on the normal digipak. I took still images from when I
was recording and also from my video, and layered them over each other and
changed the opacity so the image behind could shine through.
The reason I decided to put the picture of the singers face
on the front is because son=me of my favourite album covers have these on for
example
I believe using these give the audience a sense of realism,
instead of just listening to the music you can see the band that are
preforming.
Using the combination of black and white on the inside and
colour on the inside was a decision I made after I had finished my video, while
I was getting it looked at my friends they said they really like the transition
from black and white to colour in the chorus, which gave me the idea to have
the outside of my digipak black and white, which gives reference to the verses
of the song where it is slow and the singing is, and when the song goes into
the chorus is where it speeds up is the inside of the digipak where the
exciting part. I have done this so when people see the video and the digi pak
they get the sense of continuity within the two pieces of text.
The other text I made for my promotion package was a website
for the band, the reason I decided to do this over a poster is because I think
that it works much better as a promotion because I con display a lot more
information on it about the band, and because of advancing technology I have
being able to make it more easy access for anyone by using a site called
weebly, I was able to create a full free working website and also create a
mobile version of the site. I also made it easy to access for the people who
want to use their mobile devises to look at the website by creating a QR code
that takes people right to the website just by scanning it with a free app you
can download on most smartphones.
Here is a print screen of the first thing that you can see
on the website, which is a still image of the video which people will be able
to instantly recognise when they go onto it.
Here is a screen shot of the website on a mobile device it
has the same pictures as it does on the online website and it is very easy to
access all of the content with these large picture buttons.
For the combinations of all of my media texts that have created
I think they are very effective at promoting the music and band that I have
done. By using some of the techniques and conventions I have found while doing
my initial research I have being able to create a text that has continuity all
the way through, the same effects and the same people. The reason I have done
this is to create more of a connection with the audience that will be viewing
my media texts, because they will be able to relate the video to the website,
or the website to the digipak. I have also made the interactive part of my
texts, the website, to extend the reach of audience that this will be able to read
and view this, I have being able to do this because I was to have made a
magazine advert it would be limited to people who read magazines and people
that can afford to by them, but by making a website I am opening it up to more
and more people because most people will have access to the internet but not be
able to afford to buy a magazine. To make the website and video even more
effective I created the QR code, which again will bring in more audience
because they will be intruded to what the Code will lead to, and using new
digital technology’s gets people more interested in the texts.
What have you learnt from you’re audience research?
‘Here are my results for my poll that I put on my blog, I sent this round in an email asking people to do the poll for me so I could gain a vast audience and range of different people, what I found from this is that my music video is in the most popular genre that people said that they favoured, my age range is 16-19 which is what I said my target audience would be, this is good because I will be able to use some of the conventions in music videos of bands that I like as I am in this age range, this will help me have a better understanding of what it should be like.
